***Important Update***

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2010 summer program.
Please check back this fall.

Are international students eligible to apply?
International students are eligible to apply if you are authorized to work in the United States and meet the other eligibility requirements (you are an undergraduate or graduate student, or recent college graduate enrolled in an accredited college in the United States or in an accredited institution abroad).

Are recent high school graduates (spring/summer 2010) eligible to apply?
If you are currently enrolled in an accredited college (or will be by this spring/summer), you are eligible to apply. Please note however, preference for internship placements is given to college juniors, seniors, recent college graduates, and graduate students.

What is the deadline for applications?
Applications for the summer of 2010 will be accepted starting December 18, 2009 and will be due February 21, 2010. Applications received after the deadline and incomplete applications will be ineligible for consideration.

Where are the internship positions for the 2010 season posted on the website?
2010 Internship Opportunities can be found on our 2010 Internship Opportunities page.

Can I send my resume to ACF to review before I submit my formal application?
ACF is not able to respond to inquiries with resumes only whether from a career center or directly from a potential applicant. Resumes should only be submitted as part of a complete application packet.

What is the duration of this program?
Conservation Internships are 12 weeks in duration commencing between May and June each year. Exact dates are negotiated between successful applicants and host organizations.

Is there an orientation?
Shortly after interns are selected, ACF will host an initial teleconference to explain logistics related to contracts, housing, transportation, orientation, etc. ACF hosts an in-person orientation in early June of each year. This is usually a two to three day meeting to introduce interns to their peers, community leaders, and the broader context in which they will be working. If you have a conflict with attending the orientation, this does not preclude you from participating in the internship program. Beyond this, host organizations are responsible for providing an orientation to the organization at which interns will be working.

When will I hear if I am selected?
All final notifications will go out by March 30, 2010.

Is there a stipend provided by ACF?
ACF provides a stipend of $4,000 for the 12-week internship. This amount is provided directly to the host organization and it is in turn paid to the intern as taxable salary.

Is travel assistance available?
ACF will reimburse each intern for the lowest cost round-trip airfare to and from their school/home to the host organization location, up to $1,000. This travel reimbursement is provided directly to the host organization following the intern’s arrival in Alaska. Interns must submit the receipts for their travel to their host organization upon arriving in Alaska. Interns are expected to purchase their tickets shortly after the hiring decision and no later than two weeks prior to departure.

For those interns able to attend the orientation in Anchorage in early June, ACF will also pay for your round trip travel from your host organization (if it is not in Anchorage).

Is local transportation support provided?
Currently, interns are responsible for their daily transportation to and from their host organizations. Some interns bring their bikes, purchase a low-cost bike, carpool, walk, use bus service, or share a vehicle.

Is housing support provided?
Host organizations are responsible for assisting the intern in finding low- to no-cost housing prior to their arrival.

Are internships available outside of the summer season?
Internships are not available outside the summer season through ACF but there may be opportunities with other organizations. Please check out Peg Tileston’s What’s Up listserv at http://www.alaskaconservation.org/_pages/events_amp_publications/upcoming_events.php for information about other internships in Alaska.

Can I receive college credit for my internship?
Students selected as ACF-sponsored interns need to coordinate directly with their universities to obtain course credit for their work.

Who is eligible to apply?
We are able to offer internships to undergraduate and graduate students, and recent college graduates enrolled in an accredited college in the United States or in an accredited institution abroad. ACF is an equal-opportunity organization.

How are interns chosen?
On the application form, interns list their top three choices for an intern assignment, in order of preference. A committee first reviews the applications to ensure they are compatible with the host organization's job description as well as with the goals of Alaska Conservation Foundation's Conservation Internship Program. Applications are then forwarded to host organizations based upon 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choices. Host organizations then determine who they would like to interview and ultimately hire.

Should I contact the host organizations?
Applicants should not contact the host organizations directly or send them application materials. If you are selected to be interviewed, host organizations will contact you.

I have reviewed the website and still have questions. Who should I contact?
After carefully reviewing the website (including this FAQs, which will be updated periodically), if you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Danielle Williams at interns@alaskaconservation.org (email preferred) or at 907-276-1917.
